warning – football post

there’s something about nfl football that really gets me. lets get one thing clear – im not that cool of a guy! when i was a young kid, i collected sonic the hedgehog comic books (and i tell you, no one cool has ever read sonic the hedgehog comic books). but, as i have mentioned, i have one cool trait (besides my keen sense of fashion) – i am kind of obsessed with football – and for some reason, i love the team from new york, the jets.

new-york-jets

the “gang green” as they are called, led by rookie quarterback (and interception machine) mark sanchez, break my heart on a near weekly basis. i have been following them for about two years now, getting too involved in games that have no legitimate effect on me. sports cheering is bizarre. when they make a good play – i yell “yes!!”. and i am genuinely happy. when they make a bad play, i yell “no!!” and “what a stupid idiot!” or any kind of variation along those lines. when mark sanchez throws an interception, i say, “wow, he sucks”, when i myself can hardly throw a ball farther than i can reach. when the jets lose a game, i am sad for the rest of the day. when they win, “i’m walkin’ on sunshine” loops in my head.

in short, i am a loser.

today, the jets lost to the atlanta falcons and almost got eliminated from the playoffs. now, i know that football talk probably bores you especially if you don’t watch it, but i bring all of this up in order to point out the weird subculture of sports rooting.

i sometimes go on jets message boards when there are games on (boy do i manage to turn a cool thing like sports into something nerdy). and i am nowhere near as obsessive as some of the die hards. these guys get furious when people commit bad plays. they go into deep alcoholic slumbers when their team doesnt make the playoffs. and they are happier than kids with cap guns when something goes right.

Keep in mind that the Jets are based in Jersey. So you’re technically cheering for a New Jersey team. If you want to cheer for a New York team you should cheer for the Bills. But who the fuck would want to cheer for the Bills? I live near Buffalo and I don’t want to cheer for them.

  2. Joel says:

the bills lost both their quarterbacks to injuries too. yeah, no one likes them.

but if they ever do move to toronto canada… i will bandwagon.

  3. Stickfodder says:

I don’t think they even have a real coach right now. Just an interim one until they can convince someone that it’s worth coaching them and nobody’s biting.

  4. Joel says:

haha yeah. the bad part is they’re not bad enough to get someone like mike holmgren to be their football “czar” – holmgren probably will turn the browns around next season, like what happened to the dolphins. the bills are at the top of the bottom of the pile, so they’ll probably just wallow in mediocrity for the next five years.

    ah, football talk…

If you had told me I would someday assist in creating an environment where football would be openly discussed I would have laughed at you.

No CFL? (GO ROUGHRIDERS!) First ball I learned to throw was a football. Such a great game! :)
